An Androdious Future of Fashion by Geoff Nichols

GLITCH ERR 1.O Feature

I suppose the inspiration for this shoot came from the movie world. I'm a big Sci-Fi fan so when I was putting the shoot together that was my first port of call.

Films like Tron, Bladerunner, Star Wars and I Robot were the sources of my inspiration. AI Humanoids which look, act and think like a human are a bit far fetched though aren't they? Well, with the way technology is advancing it's not impossible to think that one day human models may be accompanied by artificially intelligent robots on the fashion runways of the world. Nobody could have predicted 10 years ago that Dolce & Gabbana would use drones for one of their shows at Milan in 2018, so who knows what will come next.

Although the shoot was futuristic in concept, I didn't want the models to wear that genre of clothes – that would be too obvious and I wanted to challenge the way we think in terms of what the future means to us as human beings. We should always seek to advance and progress but at the same time retain some link to the past and there is no greater platform to do this than in fashion.

I had been shooting at Graduate Fashion Week in London in June and one designer's collection really stood out for me in terms of it's reference to the past as well as being very progressive in concept. The designer is Sally Mankee and I knew immediately that her collection would be perfect for the shoot. I got in touch with her and gave her an idea of what I had in mind. She was on board straight away and I am so grateful for her involvement. Her ideas and enthusiasm were on tap throughout the planning stage and on the day of the shoot.

I then needed to pitch this entire idea to our MUA Jacky. She must have been at her wits end as I was coming up with additions and changes, even adding an extra model to the plan at the last minute but she was a real trouper and took it all in her stride. We decided to go for an initial basic look with each model and then build on this for each outfit change. I think it worked really well especially given the results.

Choosing the models was very difficult and I was astonished by the number of applications I received. In the end I chose Jasmine, Arianne and Holly because they complimented each other in terms of looks, so well. They are an absolute joy to work with and we had such a fab time on the day. Without them, I would not have achieved the results I wanted, so I am really grateful to all 3.

It's safe to say that this entire shoot was a team effort, as I say to everyone I work with, it's you who make the shoot happen. I'm just the guy that presses the button at the end.

Who knows, in twenty years, it could be an Android that does it !
